New York City: Food Guide for Flâneurs

New York City; the big apple, the city that never sleeps, and the city of insane culinary delights! All cuisines are found at their absolute best! I found myself travelling to New York City for 3 days, and decided to make the best of it by eating at the best restaurants…Here are my findings!

Danji, 346 W 52nd St, New York

Danji is a modern and cosy Korean tapas restaurant in Midtown (very close to Times Square). With only 36 seats, this restaurant offers a trendy and intimate ambiance with amazing food. They offer a tasting menu for 3 (or 2), including pairing with several wines and soju. They bring out impressively original and balanced flavours from their dishes. Spicy yellowtail sashimi with crispy potato flakestofu with ginger scallion dressing (seriously the best tofu dish I’ve ever had in my entire life), bulgogi beef sliders and so many more delicious plates! It’s a little on the pricey side if you decide to take the tasting menu, but it really is worth it, and the portions are quite big!

Eataly, 4 World Trade Center, 101 Liberty Street, Floor 3, New York

Get this: A massive Italian market with restaurants and bakeries located in the world trade centre. Cannolis, cheese, meat, jam, pickles, truffles, fresh produce, fresh pasta, and so much more.  This is a perfect place for anyone that loves markets! The food is amazing!

Mission Chinese Food, 171 E Broadway, New York, NY

Sichuan heat & spice at their best! Chef Danny Bowien showcases a creative twist on Chinese cuisine. This might be one of my favourites from this weekend! The food was savoury and absolutely delicious. Everything was perfect: the decor, the ambiance, the Kung Pao Pastrami, Mapo Tofu, Green Tea Noodles and  the Chengdu Style Hot Peanut Noodles! They were sold out of the Dandan Noodles (sadly). I’ll try it next time!

Il Caffe Latte, 189 Malcolm X Blvd # 1, New York, NY

I was residing in Harlem during my stay, and wanted to get a quick breakfast. Il Caffe Latte was a nice surprise! Delicious coffee, great atmosphere, and great breakfast. It’s a quaint little place.

Lombardi’s Pizza, 32 Spring St, New York, NY

I’ve  never had the pleasure to eat at NYC’s first pizzeria, until now. The staff was friendly, the pizza delightfully new yorkaise, and the restaurant very charming. To bring us to our table, we had to pass through the kitchen–it was nice to see this traditional pizzeria in action!

Ferrara Bakery & Cafe, 195 Grand St, New York, NY

Walking through Little Italy, I stumbled upon Ferrara. There was a line to get in, and it caught my attention. The cafe & bakery opened up in 1892 and it is one of NYC’s oldest cafes. The cannolis, coffee and service was great! However, for 3 coffees, 2 cannolis and a small lemon tart, the bill added up to 30$ USD. A bit costly…

Rubirosa Ristorante, 235 Mulberry St, New York, NY

The rain was pouring, I was walking the streets of SoHo with a hearty appetite and found this little gem of a restaurant! Rubirosa was fantastic! The pasta is all handmade and even the simplest items on the menu were exquisite. The ambiance and staff were great. The resturant is homey and delightful.

Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken

As a Canadian, I cannot come to the US without eating at Popeye’s. Their delicious fried chicken simply cannot be found at this level of greasiness anywhere in my country. Simple, but really tasty!
